There’s been a lot of talk about sex dolls and women literally made of rubber and plastic, but men aren’t the only ones excited about the prospect of having sex with a robot. It turns out that sex doll companies like Real Doll are going to be making male sex dolls that have batteries in them and can actually be charged to go for as long as they’re needed for. They’re even going to have verbal cues to respond to, so the experience will feel that much more real for a woman. However, making a male sex robot comes with a few more hurdles than making a female sex robot. In order to make a male doll that can outperform a sex toy, that male sex doll needs to be able to have some tricks up his sleeves that female robots don’t need. That’s where the guys over at Real Doll come in. Here’s what you need to know about the male robots who might be the face of the “ultimate pleasure experience.”
Since the advent of sex robots, men have been really excited about them. Female sex robots and dolls have been everywhere for a while, to the point that we might have reached peak sex robot. There have been movies made about sex dolls, and there’s been a lot of fascination about them that’s not going away.
However, sex robots aren’t just for men. Women are apparently beyond excited to get their hands on a male sex robot. That’s where the sex doll companies come in: Real Doll is already working on a male sex robot that can go for as long as they’re needed and can even respond to voice cues.
Matt McMullen revealed this to the Daily Star. He’s announced that his male sex dolls are going to be equipped with batteries to work on their own, and eventually, they’re going to be chargeable so they can have sex indefinitely. One robotics expert has said that these dolls are going to be better than normal sex toys.
He went on to say that the robots are going to come in all shapes and sizes. He also said that his male sex robots are going to plug into what makes sex a great experience for women, like conversation and backstories. On top of that, these sex robots are going to come with things early female sex robots could never have had.
Male sex robots are going to have features that many might not have thought of. McMullen has added that his dolls are going to be able to carry their human lover around like a real man might carry a woman over the threshold, as soon as technology advances to the point where that’s possible. It sounds outside of the realm of possibility now, but within the next couple of days, this could be the norm.
Male sex robots are going to come with one more feature. Male robots aren’t going to be the dolls female sex robots are. Rather, male robots are going to be able to actually thrust into their human lovers. “For the male sex robot to be effective, he’s going to have to move,” Matt added. “He’s going to need hip movement – be able to actually ‘dance’ as it were. That’s going to make a bigger difference for women.”
Experts believe that women will pay as much money for a male sex robot as the companies ask for. David Levy is the author of Love & Sex with Robots, and he’s gone on record saying that women are absolutely going to put down a lot of their money on sex robots. After all, lots of women buy sex toys, and this is just taking that concept to the next level.
Rather than a vibrator, a cyborg might be closer to the real thing. This is considering all the things that will eventually accompany male sex robots, like being able to “dance,” and even hold their human lover. “If women are that interested in getting satisfaction from a vibrator, imagine how the same women will feel having a robot they can put their arms round them and having the robot squeeze them,” Levy told the Daily Star.
By 2050, sex robots will be everywhere. That’s probably why we’re so fascinated with them. This kind of shift is going to make us have to think about what sex is, and how we relate to robots in modern society, especially for the future. Already, there are pro- and anti-sex robot campaigners, and the fight is only hearing up.
Anti-sex robot camapaigners could not be more against what the male sex doll represents. The Campaign Against Sex Robots believes that sex robots shouldn’t be a thing at all, and that sex robots are a way to try and replicate human connection and interaction, which is the reason why they’re against it. “To me, it comes from an infantile fantasy,” Dr. Kathleen Richardson, head of the campaign, told Inverse.
They might have a point. We tend to attach human attributes to things as banal as every day objects and pets, so it stands to reason that people will do the same thing with the robots they’re having sex with. Studies have shown that people actually get turned on by touching robots in intimate places, so this isn’t unfounded.
Many anti-sex robot activists think sex robots make the act a commodity. “The genuine desires that people have for connection are being warped by how we’re starting to think about sex today as a commodity,” Richardson said. “Not something that’s relational between persons, but as something that’s more shaped by sex trade, and that gets filtered more into the ideas of sex, and how they impact society.” She’s even done TED talks on the subject.
However, pro-sex robot campaigners think this is pigeonholing sex. There are lots of other reasons why people have sex other than an emotional connection, and comparing sex robots to the sex trade might be oversimplifying things a bit. “When you dig a little bit deeper, it sounds like a lot of what the campaign believes is that any sex which is not loving…it’s not a religious argument, but it’s that kind of conservative, sex should be between two people who love each other very much, type of thing,” said Girl on the Net.
There is a big difference here. One major way that the sex trade is different from sex robots is that people who are voluntarily in the sex trade can consent, while robots can’t. However, in order for robots to gain the ability to consent, we’d need to develop a robot consciousness for them. If we do that, it wouldn’t be ethical to program them to do anything, because that goes against the idea of consent. Then again, if we have the ability to give the robots a consciousness, would it be unethical not to give it to them?
Clearly, there’s a lot to think about. Both sides of the debate have their points, but the fact remains that these robots are getting made regardless of whether the ethics of it have been hammered out. It’ll be decades before sex robots with a possible consciousness are a thing in casual society, but it’s a good idea to at least ruminate on the idea before every woman is given a male sex robot with the power to carry her around.
